YAMATO is set to make his fourth defense of the Open the Freedom Gate Championship on September 10th, at "Untouchable 2011" in Chicago (tickets now on sale in www.DGUSA.tv Store or 267-519-9744). CIMA laid out his challenge back at "Enter the Dragon 2011" in June, and YAMATO was quick to accept the match with his longtime rival.
The CIMA vs. YAMATO history dates back several years. We can go all the way back to 2008 for the first shots fired. CIMA was in the middle of a dominant Dream Gate Championship reign, and YAMATO had recently betrayed his New Hazard unit to join the Muscle Outlaw'z. YAMATO demanded that he be the next Dream Gate challenger. Unfortunately, before any further movement could be made, CIMA went down with a severe neck injury. Not only did it force him to vacate the Dream Gate, it kept him out of action for over six months. YAMATO was undeterred. He continued to hound CIMA any time he made an appearance, going so far as to assault the injured ace on several occasions. Naturally, when it came time for CIMA to return, YAMATO had to be on the other side of the ring. For the big tag match YAMATO brought his Twin Gate championship partner Cyber Kong, while CIMA looked to junior heavyweight legend Jushin "Thunder" Lyger. YAMATO cemented his place as a future pillar of DG by choking CIMA out for a shocking referee stop win. CIMA, disgraced by the loss, would disappear for another three months before making his full time return to the ring.
The rivalry was rekindled at the end of 2009 when the Generation War broke out. After several sneak attacks by both sides, they finally agreed to their long awaited first singles match at the first Korakuen Hall show of 2010. YAMATO once again put CIMA down with the sleeper hold in one of the best matches of the year. He would ride the momentum to the Dream Gate title a few months later.
Their second singles match took place earlier this year, in the 2nd round of the annual Dragon Gate #1 tournament King of Gate. CIMA finally got into the win column, dropping the Meteora onto YAMATO for the pin fall victory.
With their singles series tied up at 1-1, they will meet again for the biggest prize in Dragon Gate USA. While CIMA has the momentum going into the match, YAMATO has been unstoppable in DGUSA. A win for YAMATO would firmly establish him as the ace of the company. CIMA is already the ace in Japan. A win for him would give him an undisputed claim to the top spot on North American shores.
